Ask The Expert: Short Potting & Conversion from 110v to 220v on a CBS-2041e

QUESTION:

Hello;

We have a CBS 2041e set up to operate at 110V.

I have two questions which I need your urgent response to:

1) very recently, the brewer no longer brews full cycles - when 
refilling for a full urn, it stops filling at the 3/4 mark.  Same 
thing happens for the 1/2 brew cycle - it stops short.

How do we fix this?  We have replaced the water filters, turned 
machine off and on etc.

2) we would like to convert the machine to 220V.  As I understand, 
this should be as simple as installing the appropriate plug, and 
connecting the new wire to the appropriate terminal.

Appreciate your urgent response to both of these questions.

ANSWER:

Chris,

Great questions, the short potting issue should be very simple. One thing I do not know is if your 2041e is outfitted with the old metal spray plate or our new CSD technology. I will assume it has the former rather than the latter based on symptoms.

The metal spray plate on the extractors while it is a great design for extraction is susceptible to scale build up, which reduces the size of the holes in the spray plate thus reducing the flow of water through the holes.

Now based on the list of things you have done to fix this I would say that you need to clean the spray plate and I do not mean wiping it down with a cloth or towel. What I mean by cleaning is to clean out each and every hole in the spray plate (there are 12) this is regardless of whether the holes look clogged or not. We recommend using a tooth pick to clean out the holes this will help prevent any kind of damage to the Teflon coating on the spay plate.

Even if the holes do not look clogged they are most assuredly clogged, and the only way to clean them is by the method mentioned above. When you perform this cleaning you should notice the scale flaking off from the outer edges of the holes.

Once you have done this run a batch of only water and check your volume. It should be fine now.

As far as the conversion of the 2041e from 120V to 120V/208-240 you will need to by a 4 wire cord (2 Hots, Neutral [White], and Ground [Green]) and you will need a 4 wire plug NEMA configuration L14-30.

Once you have the proper cord and plug you can then power down your 2041e and unplug it. Then open up the lower cover to gain access to the terminal block. Once there you will notice that your 120V cord and plug are wired to L1, N, G. Now you want to remove this cord and plug so loosen up all three lugs on the terminal block and remove leads.

Next loosen the strain relief mounted to the back of the brewer and pull 120V cord out.

Insert knew cord end into the strain relief and pull enough cord through to attach wire leads to terminal block.

Typically a four wire cord comes with one black wire, one red wire, one white wire and one green wire. So you will want to terminate each wire to the following lug.

Black to L1
White to N
Red to L2
Green to G

You will want to then make sure that your plug is wired the same way. On the plug where the wires terminate there should be letters and it should be wired as follows.

Black to X
White to W
Red to Y
Green to G

Once you have completed these steps you can plug the brewer in but do not turn it on. You will first want to verify voltage at the terminal block.

Check the following:

L1-N=110-120V
L2-N=110-120V
L1-L2=208-240V
N-G= 0-2V

Once this is confirmed turn the brewer on and you are back in business.
