Ask The Expert: How do you clean a pour over brewer?

QUESTION:

Hi – How should I instruct a customer to clean a pour over brewer?  I guess the water tank area is scummy.
Thanks!

ANSWER:

This is a good question.

I am assuming that the reason the tank needs to be cleaned is because the scale build up in the tank.

This kind of thing requires the use of a descaling agent. Companies like Urnex, and Everpure along with others have products designed for this specific purpose.

The basic application in the case of the pour over is to empty the tank using the drain valve mounted on the back of the brewer. Then add descaling product to 2gal of hot water from the tap (Please follow quantity instructions provided by manufacturer). Slowly pour water into the reservoir until water comes out of spray head. Turn brewer on and allow brewer to come up to temperature allow to stand for recommended time recommended by manufacturer.

Last step drain tank using drain valve mounted on the back of the brewer. Then flush about 5 gallons of water through the reservoir making sure to catch water as it comes out of the spray head.

If you need any further assistance please let me know.
