Ask The Expert: Error 101 Code

QUESTION:

Hi,  Yesterday we turned the water line off to service the espresso machine and when done, turned it back on.  This morning I turned on my fetco brewer, warmed it up and began to brew the first pot of coffee when I got and Error 101 reading.  The pot seems to be brewing fine but I am concerned about the refill.  Could it be related to the interruption in water yesterday?

Vicki

ANSWER:

Vicki,

To answer your question let me first say that this could be related but it could also be coincidence.

If the brewer and the espresso machine are on the same water line than it may very well be connected.

If the brewer and espresso machine are not on the same water line then no, it is not a coincidence.

The first thing to check in these cases is to make sure that the water supply valve is all the way on. There are many reasons why it may not be but we can never assume because we did not touch it that it is not possible that the water supply was not left in a less than completely on position. So please check this first.

Next question is do you have a water filter tied in with your coffee brewer? If so when was the last time you changed it?  If the water filter is clogged or at the end of its life cycle then the flow rate will reduce thus generating error code 101.

If the filter has been changed recently it is possible the filter was not purged properly which would also affect the flow rate of water causing the error code 101. It is possible that during a filter change the carbon in the filter was flushed out into the strainer on the fill valve again reducing the flow of water causing an error code 101.

Take a look at these things and let me know what you find.
